And so it begins

by sander21. August 2009 14:57

As you can see on the picture below, I finally arrived in Taiwan. I haven't really slept since I took off and it's about 9 pm here in Taiwan now.

It has been a long trip, yet I didn't even miss my mp3-player since the two other danes in Taiwan had me entertained all the way down there. Things right now are just weird. I'm really excited about everything yet I am really tired too.

As mentioned already, the trip down there was rather painless even though it was a really long trip. However, I didn't sleep so when suddenly a big group of Taiwanese stood right on the other side of a door, waving a big banner with my face on and all greeting me at once, it got quite overwhelming. Not exactly as I had expected culture-shock-overwhelming, everything just suddenly accelerated to a raging speed. I guess the reception were just about as excited as I was.

I've been through a lot already. Apparently a lot of people really want to meet me so I guess the next few days going to be very eventfull, yet today has already set a pretty good standard. I've driven around Taipei and met a lot of nice people, both by car and by scooter, (of course I weren't the one riding it, don't worry.)

I have tasted curry chicken rice, a lot of different tea, on a side note I actually found a few bits of airplane food that weren't all bad even, though it doesn't really beat eating noodles with another family living just nearby. All their food is really strange and new to me. Absolutely new. There's a lot of tastes here I could never even imagine, and even though it feels rather weird eating such strange tasting food, it's really exciting. Maybe I'll be able to explain what the food is called and a bit more about some of it when I start learning some more. (They make a lot out of soy. Be warned. Although it's not all that bad, yet everything has some sort of tea taste to it apparently. Of course I might also just be confusing it since I always drink tea no matter what else I put in myself.)

I have also tried Bubble Tea. A very special drink I'd say. It kindof takes some skills to actually "drink" it. (Because you have to chew and eat the bubbles, or as the locals call them: frog eggs (because that's what they look and feel like - little black slimy balls that are soft in the outer layers and more "chewable" in the middle.)

And finally, (that was before the bubble tea although,) I've been to a hot spring. Quite a special thing I think I will need a bit seasoning in.

I am trying hard to learn chinese and the people here get very surprised and happy every time I say something in chinese the right way. (Which I do a lot. I just forget it really quickly thereafter so I guess I can't become an expert on the first day.)

I have bunches of more to tell, but I should probably get some sleep soon, because I think I need to catch up. (Not entirely sure though because everything is really weird, especially but not primarily because of the jetlag I think.)

Cya there all incoming exchange students, and good luck to everyone back at home. It's really really hot down here. Everywhere.
