Made my own milk tea

by sander17. February 2011 15:11

Well, it's not much of an accomplishment, but I managed to make something very much like the Milk Tea or Bubble Tea that Taiwan is so famous for. Without the frog eggs unfortunately. Maybe I should see if it's possible to import some of those.

First thing you need a decent tea from Eastern Asia. The most commonly used teas are Oolong Tea and Earl Grey, though Jasmine Tea is used too. (I actually made some milk tea with jasmine tea the other day.)
This here, Oolong Tea, is my favourite. There's almost nothing left, but I've managed to save a little bit still. I should probably order some more soon when I get the money. I found a website that sells 400g for 250DKK in Denmark. I hope I can find something cheaper than that of course.

So I cooked some water and put some of that oolong in it, let it stand for itself for some hours, then seperated the water from the tea leaves and heated it up again. When I tried it with the jasmine tea the other day I felt like the tea wasn't strong enough, so I wanted to get it really concentrated. I let is semi-boil at a low heat for a while so that some of the water would vaporise, just for a few minutes as I was afraid it might damage the taste in some way if I heat it too much. And yeah, guess what? After that, milk goes in and it looks funny like this. You might want to add in some sugar if you aren't Taiwanese.

The milk I put in was completely white, I promise. I really liked the strong brownish tint that the tea gave to it. It looks almost like some sort of cocoa drink, but milk tea is really supposed to look like this. Now I just wish I had those "frog eggs", so that I could turn it into Pearl Milk Tea. It was refreshing and tasted a lot like the real deal, but I still miss Taiwan.
